For this fourth edition, the Ibero-American Film Festival Miami is welcoming a select group of special guests, who have already arrived in Miami to attend a variety of scheduled activities. First, it is a great honor to have Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Batel, vice president of the prestigious Morelia International Film Festival, which recently reached its 19th anniversary. Cárdenas Batel, along with the president of the IAFFM, Fernando Arciniega, will inaugurate the cycle “FICM Presenta”, which starting this year will bring the winning film from its previous edition to Miami audiences.
Another special guest is the Mexican actress Mabel Cadena, who at her young age has already starred in contrasting parts in three major productions. She played the role of the indigenous Tecuelhuetsin, in Amazon’s Hernán series, about the encounter between the Spanish conquerors and the peoples inhabiting the Mesoamerica region; in the film La diosa del asfalto, she interpreted Ramira, an intimidating gang girl; and in the historical film Dance of the 41, she played a conservative housewife in Mexico the turn of the 20th century, during the regime of General Porfirio Díaz.
Another special guest is Nicolás Celis, founder of Pimienta Films, one of the three best production companies in Mexico, as it was recently named by Variety. He is known for his sharp eye for choosing first-rate projects, such as Alfonso Cuarón’s Rome, which garnered more than 200 awards, including three Oscars; the Colombian co-production Birds of Passage, shortlisted for the Academy Awards; and, most recently, Prayers for the Stolen, Tatiana Huezo’s award-winning film to be featured at the IAFFM’s Tribute Night.
This select list also includes Dominican actress and producer Sterlyn Ramírez, whose commitment to bringing the stories of the Latino community closer together through film is commendable. In addition, she is the founder and CEO of Selene Films, a production house whose purpose is to empower and motivate women to tell their own stories. And the visual artist and social activist Álvaro Cuevas, creator of the pictorial style known as “huellismo”, a technique that takes the use of fingerprints to the extreme. He is also a sculptor recognized for transforming confiscated weapons donated by the Mexican Army into works of art that propagate a message of peace.
Invitados especiales del IAFFM
En su cuarta edición, el Ibero-American Film Festival recibirá a un selecto grupo de invitados especiales, que ya se encuentran en la ciudad para asistir a las diferentes actividades programadas. En primer lugar, es un gran honor contar con Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Batel, vicepresidente del prestigioso Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia, que este 2021 llegó a su aniversario 19. Cárdenas Batel, junto con el presidente del IAFFM, Fernando Arciniega, inaugurará en unos días el ciclo “FICM Presenta”, que a partir de este año traerá para el público de Miami a la cinta ganadora de su edición anterior.
Otra invitada especial es la actriz mexicana Mabel Cadena, que a su corta edad ya ha participado con papeles protagónicos y contrastantes en tres grandes producciones. Para Amazon, encarnó el papel de la indígena Tecuelhuetsin, en Hernán, una serie sobre el encuentro entre los conquistadores españoles y los pobladores de Mesoamérica; en la película La diosa del asfalto interpretó a Ramira, una intimidante chica banda, mientras que en la cinta histórica El baile de los 41 fungió como una conservadora esposa en el México de la época del general Porfirio Díaz.
A esta lista se suma Nicolás Celis, fundador de la casa productora Pimienta Films, que recientemente fue nombrada por la revista Variety como una de las tres mejores productoras de México. Gracias a su certero ojo para elegir proyectos, en su haber cuenta con Roma, cinta de Alfonso Cuarón acreedora a más de 200 galardones, incluidos tres premios Oscar; la coproducción colombiana Pájaros de verano, preseleccionada a los premios de la Academia; y, más recientemente, Noche de fuego, la multipremiada película de Tatiana Huezo que se proyectará en la Noche de Tributo del IAFFM.
Nos engalana también la actriz y productora dominicana Sterlyn Ramírez, fundadora y CEO de Selene Films, casa productora cuyo propósito es empoderar y motivar mujeres para que narren sus propias historias; su compromiso de acercar historias de la comunidad latina por medio del cine es encomiable. Otro invitado destacado es el artista visual y activista social Álvaro Cuevas, creador mexicano del estilo pictórico conocido como “huellismo”, una técnica que lleva al extremo el uso de las huellas digitales. Es, además, un escultor reconocido por transformar armas decomisadas y donadas por el Ejército mexicano en obras de arte que propagan un mensaje de paz.
